Humble Beginnings
My family is the 8th generation of Wardes to live here, with many colourful characters preceding us, all with their own story to tell.
These stories, our history I suppose, are one of the things that makes Squerryes so special. Equally so is the glue, our family motto, that has bound all these chapters and all these people together over the centuries:
‘Licet Esse Beatis’: it is permitted to be joyful.”

Unique Grapes
Back in 2004, a Champagne house visited Squerryes to try and buy some of it. A geological survey had confirmed that our chalk escarpment had qualities similar to the esteemed “Cote des Blancs” region of Champagne. Along with the soils, the long, moderate summers and cool evenings provide the perfect growing conditions for the vines.

Thankfully, good sense prevailed and at the last minute Henry Warde said “thanks, but no thanks” to the Champagne House, and set about planting his own vines, on his own land.
The rest, as they say, is history.
